The Differences Between Stone Seal and Hard Seal: Choosing the Right Concrete Sealer for Your Project

Concrete is a versatile and durable building material, but it can be susceptible to staining, cracking, and weather damage. Fortunately, concrete sealers offer a simple and effective way to protect your investment and enhance the aesthetics of your concrete surfaces. However, with different types of stone sealers available, choosing the right one can be confusing. This blog dives into the differences between two popular Con-Treat products: Stone Seal and Hard Seal.

Understanding Concrete Sealers: A Foundation for Choice

Before diving into specifics, let’s explore some basic principles of concrete sealers. These coatings penetrate or form a film on the surface, protecting it from:

  • Water penetration: Water can seep into concrete, leading to cracks and spalling (flaking) during freeze-thaw cycles.
  • Staining: Spills and dirt can easily stain unsealed concrete.
  • Chemicals: Salt, deicing agents, and other chemicals can accelerate concrete degradation.
  • UV rays: Sunlight can fade the color of exposed concrete.

Concrete sealers also enhance the aesthetics of the surface by:

  • Deepening the color: Some sealers can deepen the natural color of concrete.
  • Providing a glossy or matte finish: Sealers offer various finish options to suit your taste.

Stone Sealer: Protection and Enhancement for Diverse Surfaces

Stone Seal is a solvent-based acrylic premium sealer, ideal for both exterior concrete and natural stone surfaces. Here’s a breakdown of its key features:

  • Technology: Solvent-based acrylic
  • Coverage: Approx. 120m² per 1 coat per drum (porosity dependent)
  • Finish: Semi-penetrating, semi-wet look, matt/low satin finish. UV resistant, non-yellowing, and provides excellent scuff resistance.
  • Areas: Exterior concrete, natural stone (e.g., pavers, patios, pool surrounds)
  • Application:
    • Breathable – allows moisture vapor transmission.
    • Leaves a thin film of protection on the surface.
    • Offers good slip resistance (unless the concrete is highly polished).
    • Apply 2 coats with a roller or use a pour and broom method with a solvent-resistant broom.
    • Recoat after a light pressure wash and drying.
    • May require a 3rd coat on highly porous surfaces.
    • Address micro bubbles by rolling dry or using xylene.
    • Best results with overnight drying between coats.
    • Hard dry time: 12-14 hours.

Stone Seal is a great choice for a variety of applications as a natural stone sealer. Its breathable nature makes it suitable for surfaces exposed to moisture, while its UV resistance and non-yellowing properties ensure long-lasting protection. Additionally, the matt/low satin finish enhances the natural look and beauty of concrete or stone. Check our our range of natural look sealers.

Hard Seal: Durable Protection for High-Traffic Areas

Hard Seal is another solvent-based acrylic sealer from Con-Treat, specifically designed for exterior concrete surfaces that experience high traffic:

  • Technology: Solvent-based acrylic
  • Coverage: Approx. 120m² per 1 coat per drum (porosity dependent)
  • Finish: Wet look, satin-gloss finish that darkens the concrete (available in clear and tinted Colourbond colours on special order).
  • Areas: Exterior concrete, driveways, exposed aggregate, pathways, etc.
  • Application:
    • Apply 2 thin coats with a roller, cross-hatching each coat for even coverage.
    • Tinting options available (see Con-Treat website for colors).
    • Avoid application in high heat.
    • Recoat after a light pressure wash and drying. No sanding required.
    • Can be driven on after 3-4 days.

Hard Seal offers a durable, wet-look finish with a slight darkening effect. The inclusion of special additives reduces hot tire marking, making it ideal for driveways and other high-traffic areas.

Choosing Between Stone Seal and Hard Seal:

The right sealer for your project depends on your specific needs:

  • Protection and aesthetics: Stone Seal offers UV resistance, good slip resistance, and a natural-looking finish for various surfaces.
  • High traffic and durability: Hard Seal provides a wet-look finish with hot tire marking resistance, perfect for driveways and high-traffic areas.
